For many 2020 has been devastating on so many levels, my heart goes out to those who are struggling, and yet others share they’re having their best year.
I recently met local artist Annica Malmkvist and her story of 2020 was music to my heart. It encapsulates what I know to be true about ‘slipstreaming’ with life.
Like so many, work dried up for Annica in March due to COVID-19. She saw this as an opportunity to devote all her time to painting, without life’s usual distractions.
Absorbed in what she loves most and does best, life for Annica began to flow. She stayed in touch with her Scandinavian family and friends via social media, sharing videos of how she was spending her days during lockdown. She came across the facebook group Love Paddington = Support Paddington, that was set up to support businesses in her neighbourhood and began posting pictures of her painting and prints. The ‘flow’ paid off and all of a sudden she had orders and commissions, lots of them.
With social distancing rules in place, sold artwork was collected from her veranda clothes line. This inspired her to install another line on her front fence, where she hung artwork for sale by donation. She didn’t stop there, Annica painted the front fence to share her joyful art with the world.
During an afternoon walk, a local news reporter stumbled across Annica’s outdoor gallery. Days later her story, along with other neighbours who had set up street stalls to make the most of increased local foot traffic, was aired.
Business continued to soar for the Swedish born artist. Annica says there wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t sell a piece, and has lost count of how many she sold.
Annica’s story goes to show that in a year when so many others have struggled, particularly those in the creative industries, it’s possible to defy the odds. So how did she do it?
Speaking from personal experience, I’ve found that when you embody your ‘calling’, eliminate the distractions which create noise and friction in your life, absorb yourself in the things that make you lose all sense of time and space and take inspired action, that’s when life changes dramatically, and quickly.
Ahhhhh… the satisfaction when life feels good.
You can watch the news reel of Annica and her neighbours here.
If you enjoy supporting local artists and are looking for handmade Christmas gifts you can see more of Annica’s art at www.artbodysoul.com.au or Facebook and Instagram. If you are after something bespoke you’re in luck, she can take care of that too!
Over the coming months, I’ll share more success stories from clients and friends who have stepped into their purpose and are now living a life they love.
If you’re at a loss as to what your ‘calling’ is and don’t have the luxury to ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ to discover your calling, don’t worry, I have the remedy! It’s Find Your Purpose, Change Your Life.
This is the first workbook in the ‘Build A Life You Love’ Workbook series. There is work involved, hence I didn’t call it a ‘book’. But the good news is it’s your shortcut to discovering your purpose. I’ve done the hard work for you, and spent oodles in the process, and I’m pleased that you’ll be spared that part of the self discovery journey. The workbook makes for a fun and exciting adventure, because it’s all about you and developing an intimate relationship with yourself.
