The journey that changed my life
Just shy of five years ago I set out on an adventure to the US and Mexico. It was a spur-of-the-moment ‘why the hell not’ type of trip. I knew my destination. However, my day-to-day itinerary was left to chance. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this vacation was the precursor and catalyst to my life being turned upside down and inside out.
Today, much of my physical life still looks the same as it did before – I’m still single, live in the same house and continue to work as a freelance event manager. Onlookers say that many things about me haven’t changed – that is, they use words like ‘warm, laid-back, bubbly, generous, courageous, always smiling’ etc etc to describe me. Apparently my persona hasn’t changed.
But, I am no longer who I was prior to setting out. I’ve changed dramatically. What I know now is that who people saw before was a facade that I took out in public. How I felt on the inside and my view of myself was very different. I was a shell of a person, trying to keep up appearances and hold it all together. Looking back, I was suffering from anxiety and depression, and I realise now I had struggled with it my entire life.
So what changed?
The sense of joy, freedom and wonder I felt during my vacation made me determined to experience my day-to-day life with the same level of exuberance. I set off on a mission. I covered a lot of inner territory, and discovered people, information and tools that changed my life (as well as others that weren’t so helpful).
Introducing A Guide for Life
This site – A Guide for Life – is about the changes that have occurred in my life, what I learnt and who helped me along the way. It’s designed to be a free resource to help those who are feeling as lost, overwhelmed and helpless as I was. My aim in sharing this information, is with the hope that it will support others so that they can live life with the same sense purpose, liberation and pleasure that I’m now experiencing everyday.
I’m still in the process of documenting my journey, and writing descriptions and summaries of the resources and people that helped me, but it’s so very close to being finished and I’m really looking forward to sharing it with you.
Over the coming days-week-months I’ll be adding content and posts. So check back in soon to see where things are at. Alternatively, if you’d like to automatically receive updates, add your e-mail address to the box below and I’ll drop you a line.
It’s almost midnight here. Time for bed.
